IEBC Launches National Continuous Voter Registration

The Commission on Monday, October 15th, 2018 launched the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise that is targeting to register over 500,000 voters by January of 2019. The official launch was held at Unoa Grounds in Makueni County and presided over by IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati and Commissioners Prof. Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu. In attendance was the County leadership of Makueni County led by Governor Kivutha Kibwana and Senator Mutula Kilonzo.

In line with the Constitutional Provision under Article 83 read with Article 88 and the Elections Act of 2011, the Commission is mandated to continuously register voters and regularly revise the voters roll. While officially opening the CVR exercises, IEBC chairperson said that fifty percent of an election is the accuracy of the voters register and therefore the Commission takes the voter registration process very seriously. He pledged to work with the County leadership and partner with relevant stakeholders to mobilize voters who are unregistered.

The launch took place in Makueni County strategically to promote the spirit of electoral devolution as envisioned in the Constitution. The function was successfully put together by the collaborative efforts of IEBC Makueni County office led by CEM Eisha Mohamed, Headquarter Staff and the County Government of Makueni.

IEBC Meets Makueni Inmates, Promises Electoral Services

Christmas came early for inmates of Makueni GK Prison when IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, Commissioners Prof. Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu and Members of Secretariat paid them a courtesy call after officially launching the National Continuous Voter registration drive in the same County.

The inmates entertained the attendees with play, song and dance and praised the Commission for successfully delivering credible elections despite the harsh political environment. They shared some of their challenges including lost identity cards and asked the Commission to collaborate with the National Government to ensure that they have the requisite documents for registration.

The Commission promised to take a voter registration kit to the facility in compliance with the provision of the law that allows inmates to participate in the electoral process. The Chairman's Kitty donated a token of appreciation to the prison as an early Christmas gift, thanking them for entertaining guests during the launch of the national voter registration drive. The gesture is part of the Commission's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that provides a platform for giving back to society and a way of connecting with its stakeholders. The visit was organized by Makueni CEM Eisha Mohamed as part of her stakeholder engagement in the County.
